Interviews are not just about answering questions, they are about telling your story in a way that connects with the employer. Many professionals have the skills and experience, but nerves or lack of preparation can stop them from showing their true selves. Here are some practical tips to help you excel, including a tried-and-tested method for structuring your answers.

1. Do your homework

Before any interview, research the firm thoroughly. Understand their services, their client base, and their culture. Look at recent news, awards or thought leadership pieces. Walking into an interview informed shows genuine interest.

2. Prepare examples using STAR

Many CPA firms ask competency-based questions, such as “Tell me about a time you resolved a conflict” or “Give an example of when you managed a tight deadline.” The STAR method is a clear way to answer:

  • Situation: Set the scene.

  • Task: Explain your responsibility.

  • Action: Describe what you did.

  • Result: Share the outcome.

This keeps your answers structured and focused. Importantly, it prevents you from drifting into vague or overly long responses.

3. Practice aloud

It is one thing to think of answers in your head, another to say them out loud. Practising with a friend, mentor or recruiter helps you refine your delivery and build confidence.

4. Ask thoughtful questions

An interview is a two-way process. Asking about training opportunities, client exposure or team culture demonstrates you are thinking carefully about fit. Avoid questions about salary at the first stage unless invited to discuss.

5. Mind your body language

Eye contact, posture and tone of voice all matter. They communicate confidence and professionalism. Even if you feel nervous, presenting yourself with calm assurance makes a strong impression.

6. Manage nerves

Almost everyone feels nervous. The key is preparation. Review your CV thoroughly, anticipate questions, and take deep breaths before you go in. Nerves are normal, but preparation turns them into positive energy.

Remember: interviews are not about being perfect, they are about being authentic, clear and confident in presenting who you are. With preparation and the STAR method, you can do exactly that.
