Even the strongest professionals can make errors that cost them opportunities. Interviews are not about being perfect, but avoiding avoidable mistakes can make a big difference. Here are five of the most common missteps and how to prevent them.

1. Not researching the firm
Walking into an interview without knowing the firm’s services, client base or culture is a red flag. Always research their website, recent news and any insights you can gather.
2. Giving vague answers
General responses like “I am a good team player” do not cut through. Use the STAR method to give specific examples that demonstrate your ability.
3. Focusing only on yourself
While you should highlight your achievements, remember interviews are about fit. Show how your skills will benefit the firm and its clients.
4. Poor body language
Crossed arms, lack of eye contact or speaking too quietly can undermine your answers. Sit confidently, smile and project professionalism.
5. Not asking questions
An interview is a two way process. Failing to ask questions suggests a lack of curiosity. Prepare a few thoughtful ones, such as how the firm supports development or what a typical day looks like.
Avoiding these mistakes will not guarantee success, but it will ensure you make the strongest possible impression.
